What Has Happened to the Texas Rangers?

Arlington, Texas - Just about a month ago, the Texas Rangers held a seven-game lead in the American League West. After tonight, they trail the A's by one game.

Doesn't take much to recognize that it's been an awful month for baseball in North Texas. In fact, the Rangers were at one time 5-12 in the month of June, the worst mark in Major League Baseball. Ouch.

So what the hell happened?

Not much. Put simply, the starting pitching has been horrid and the offense has been nonexistent. I feel like the baseball version of Jim Mora: We couldn't hit the ball. We couldn't throw pitches. We didn't do diddly poo in the month of June.

Sure, there are reasons for the ineptitude. Offensively, Ian Kinsler and Mitch Moreland saw time on the disabled list. Ditto for Alexi Ogando. Add that to an already-shelved Colby Lewis and Matt Harrison and the rotation is a little out of whack at the moment. Hitters are figuring out rookies Justin Grimm and Nick Tepesch. Josh Limdblom is simply not a big-league starter. The rotation has to improve (i.e. get healthy or improve via trade) or else this team won't win the division.

I recently attended a game during the swoon on June 15 against Toronto. The Blue Jays won, 6-1. Yep, the game was pretty depressing, but we still had a great time. Our view was pretty nice. Section 232 on the third-base side for $40/ticket. You could see all the action nicely:

The Rangers' skid ended up reaching six games, the longest losing streak since the team lost six in 2010. That team reached the World Series. Hopefully, this team can right the ship.

There have been signs recently.

Texas bounced back to take three of four games from Oakland in a huge home series this week. Oakland's lead in the division is now only one. Texas sits at 41-32, still in solid position to make noise. Upcoming series at St. Louis and the Yankees will really see if this team has snapped out of its funk. I hope that answer is a resounding yes.
